Research Funding and Strategic Initiatives

ORCIDs (Open Researcher and Contributor IDs) are a unique identifier for researchers, and will disambiguate between researchers with the same name. ORCIDs are linked to, and increasingly required by, many publishers, repositories and funders. They are already mandatory in new grant applications to the Wellcome Trust and are being integrated into RCUK grant applications. As of January 2016, 13 publishers have committed to making ORCID mandatory for corresponding authors. ORCIDs are therefore set to be important for researchers in the immediate future.

The University is increasing the services available through Symplectic and has recently created a link with ORCID. This means that researchers are able to connect (or create) their unique ORCID identifier with their profile in Symplectic.

Linking ORCID to Symplectic is a simple process and will take less than five minutes. An instructional video can be found online at:

http://osc.cam.ac.uk/author-tools/managing-your-online-presence/how-link-your-symplectic-and-orcid-profiles

In brief:

  • Open your Symplectic profile
  • Click on the green “ORCID” logo on the bottom right hand side of the page
  • Once on the ORCID website, choose to link your existing ORCID or register for a new one
  • Confirm your ID
  • Allow connection with Symplectic
