Dr Oliver Mayeux

Research Interests

I am a sociolinguist whose research focuses on Louisiana Creole, an endangered language spoken by between 3,500 and 6,000 mostly elderly people in rural South Louisiana. This involves conducting linguistic and ethnographic fieldwork in historically Creole-speaking communities as well as archival work. My major focus is understanding how this language has changed since it emerged in plantation societies in the eighteenth century.
