I work on the history of political thought, with a focus on the US and Europe from the twentieth century to the present. My current book project focuses on claims about race, rights, and national hypocrisy in the twentieth century US.

Dr Tom Smith

Research Interests

I'm a historian of US religion and US foreign relations, with a particular focus on Protestant missionaries and their relationship to US power. My book, Word across the Water, examines US empire in Hawai'i and the Philippines in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through the lens of missionaries, exploring the ways in which they used historical narratives to negotiate their position between the imperial and the local.

I’m a historian of the United States focused on Indigenous dispossession and US state formation primarily in the nineteenth century American West. I also work in the digital humanities, mainly using GIS to examine the history of US public lands. In collaboration with journalists, I've written about the history of US universities, too.
